Summer Reading

June 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Congrats on finishing up the year, guys! Particularly congrats to the graduates!

I was packing up my room for the summer and caught myself stuffing 12 books into my summer suitcase. Truthfully, I’m highly doubtful about whether I can finish all the books, but summer is probably the best (only?) time I have to read for myself while I’m a student.

Does anyone know of good book recommendations? They can be Christian-related or otherwise. I’ll throw a few books out there that I’ve finished since I’ve been at MIT:

  • The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer - This classic is thin page-wise but thick otherwise. Tozer writes directly and elegantly about God’s presence, definitely awakening the spiritual sensitivities of the heart. I’ve ended up in tears after reading certain chapters.
  • The Calvary Road by Roy Hession - This is another classic that is difficult to find in most bookstores but is worth getting your hands on. It’s also very small but takes time to fully digest (years, maybe - I know people who come back to this year on year). One main point is revival that begin with each Christian’s personal recognition of sin, brokenness and desperation, and the need for Jesus.
  • The Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster - This book a modern classic since the original version was written in the 1970s but carries the weight of Christian books written in earlier decades. Foster outlines different inward and outward spiritual disciplines (i.e prayer, fasting, service) from both spiritual and practical viewpoints as he encourages the reader to move beyond discipline defined by duty toward discipline defined by joy. A hardcover version is currently out in most major bookstores.
  • The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs - I’m throwing a non-fiction, non-spiritual book onto this list because this is stuff I personally enjoy reading. Plus, I think it’s important to read about what’s going on outside of MIT. Sachs’ book provides a very good overview of issues facing this generation, primarily extreme global poverty. Although his plan to eradicate extreme poverty is highly controversial, at least it’s a step toward thinking of a solution.

And now some books from other book lists:

  • Relevant Recommends - Relevant Mag - This list Include a few books that are obviously Christianity infused (C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity) and not then those that are not so (J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye). The list also has music albums and movies that could be deemed college student musts. I appreciate the variety.
  • The Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals - Christianity Today - The title of this list may not be attractive to some, but the list is definitely filled with classics that I want to read, too.

As for myself, I’m beginning this summer by reading Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. It’s an unconventional choice, since the book is known for defining the Beat generation of the 1950s and 1960s and describes a soul-searching cross-country road trip. Hopefully it’ll give me something to think about.

I just finished “The Pilgrim’s Regress” by CS Lewis. For me, it was a slow start and a fast finish! It’s an allegorical book in true CS Lewis style but also explicitly apologetic. I enjoyed guessing what each of the characters were (not that it’s hard) and reading between the lines to understand what their words and actions meant outside of the story.

Some other books I read this summer:
    O’Malley Chronicles.
All 6 of them are AMAZING - mystery, romance, and Christianity rolled into one…totally addicting (like Harry Potter addicting) so wait til you have some time on your hands

Rebel with a Cause. (Franklin Graham)
Definitely recommend this autobiography. Easy to read, honest and down to earth…great book!

    The Crosswicks Trilogy. (Madeleine L’Engle)
A more personal side of L’Engle - very quotable and some great reflections on life, theology spotty but author-acknowledged. I’m still reading the third in the series…
