Catholics are coming out of the woodwork. To me, it seems to me like they’re proving to everyone that they’re “real” Catholics because they’re excited about the Pope’s visit and thus deserve to go to heaven.
Some people have been comparing the Pope to God or at least Jesus. One little girl said that seeing the Pope was like seeing an angel flying through the clouds. Another woman called him the Prince of Peace. I thought Jesus was the Prince of Peace. But then the Pope is supposed to the vicar, the representative, of Jesus.
I don’t mean to mock Catholics, but it’s just so “in your face” (i.e. if you’ve been watching CNN a lot in the last couple of weeks), that I wanted to say something. But for the non-Catholic Christians out there, we could all very well act the same way if the right person came around.
What about Protestants
Who would Protestant Christians get excited about seeing? If T.D. Jakes came to town, would we bend over backwards? Or what about Rick Warren? Or Charles Stanley?
Do you stand up a little straighter when your pastor or your Bible study leader comes around?
What does that say about our character and our priorities? Technically, Jesus is around us all the time and yet we only start to straighten up when we physically see certain people.
Food for Thought
How can we think about life such that we “straighten up” every time we think about God being around us all the time? It’s not like we should resort to feeling guilty, but rather we could want to work harder even when there seem to be no one watching.
In other words, what makes us treat an optional problem set like one with a due date?
Mikala is graduating in the spring and going to work for Oracle in sunny CA! But she’s gonna miss Impact and Crusade folks, especially the lovely ladies of the Black Women’s Fellowship.
