It’s a Matter of Heart

May 3rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

I was reading through Psalm 50 and came across a verse that really hit me:

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

- Psalm 50:16,17

Actually, these words hit me first during freshman year at a church retreat and multiple times thereafter. They’re such a reminder that what God really desires is a sincere, humble, and repentant heart. Without the right heart, what I do outwardly means nothing. My presence at church, my body at Bible study, my acts of Christian service, my deeds, my motions, my words that speak of glorifying His name, my time that I give up, my spiritual conversations, my writing this entry - they’re are all in vain.

Only God can see what men cannot see. We need to ask ourselves what God sees when He looks at us.

  • Is there substance behind our actions?
  • Are we acting in God’s name but with selfish motives (i.e. self-glorification, wanting to look good)?
  • Are our actions distracting us from a personal relationship with Jesus?
  • What is the state of our hearts?

So often we don’t even know what’s going on inside of ourselves. We can trick ourselves into thinking we’re right with God. So let us each ask God to:

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

- Psalm 139:23,24

Maybe we’ll be reaffirmed. Or maybe God will reveal something about our hearts that, once struggled through, will bring us closer and closer to becoming like Jesus.

    When I was not a Christian I was told that there should be a difference between Christians and non-Christians. So, I started watching people.
